Well written and engaging thriller with a fast-moving plot. The use of some actual modern political figures is a risk that may turn off some readers, but the storytelling is solid, and writing skill is impressive, and this is an enjoyable read if you get past the real world baggage. The chapter title images are not something I have seen much of before, but they were well done. Overall good book, and worth your time, but if you are the type to get mad over the mention of a few modern political figures this may not be one for you.

I just finished inhaling The Hodin Cabal, and honestly, it surprised me. The writing has a smooth confidence I rarely find these days. The story offers clean pacing, sharp dialogue, and scenes that put me right in the middle of the action. Very refreshing.

The author knows how to build tension without dragging things out, and the world comes together piece by piece in a way that feels organic, not forced.

What impressed me most was how effortless the story moves. The characters did not just feel like names on a page. The author made them feel real and pulled me into their daily lives. It’s the kind of book I start reading and before I knew it was far past my typical bedtime.

I definitely recommend it for mystery lovers.

I picked up this book on a night when I was bored and just wanted something that would keep me awake, and I ended up reading way longer than I planned. I really liked following Debra because she feels sharp and stubborn in a way that made me root for her. The mystery kept pulling me along, and a couple moments actually made me stop and think about what might be hiding behind the scenes in real life too. There were a few spots where the point of view switched a bit fast for me, and I had to reread to catch up, but it didn’t stop me from enjoying the ride. By the time I finished, I was already thinking about who I could talk to about that ending.

Which, in this one, there’s a little bit of that but at least it’s because the villains of the story are trying to play it off like they’re cooperating with the investigators to keep heat off themselves. The plot was also a lot more intriguing, the stakes felt like they were raised a lot higher in this one.

This book has a good story at its core — engaging, well-paced, and with a flow that kept me reading, which is important to someone like me who speed-reads. The mystery and investigative elements are well thought out, and the intertwining storylines across the three parts work nicely. However, the formatting really pulled me out of the experience. The chapters include odd pictures, there are single-sentence lines, and unnecessary breaks that disrupt the rhythm of the read. It’s one of those cases where the content itself is solid, but the presentation makes it harder to enjoy smoothly. If it were formatted properly — with consistent paragraphs instead of awkward spacing — this could easily be a five-star read. The story itself is interesting enough to carry through the distractions, but the layout holds it back a little.

The Hodin Cabal: Choices is a novel about a secret organization on a mission to deal with a major environmental problem. This complex group deals and acts on decisions made without regard to normal ethics. Debra Ann Wynn, the main character in this story, is an investigative reporter looking into this worldwide network.

One of the many strengths of Avril Maria Serene’s writing is her ability to make an organization such as this one seem realistic. She does this by revealing the group’s details while Debra Ann is interviewing a dissatisfied member and also in conversations with people she’s recruited to help her investigation. These sections are wordy, but intriguing because the concepts are fascinating.

There are several interesting subplots, such as Debra Ann’s relationship with Paul, the father of a sick child and the struggles with alcoholism of Debra Ann’s friend, police officer Marci Robbins, a person Debra Ann has called on for help. Serene wove these stories into the main plot well.

I recommend this book to readers who enjoy complex mysteries with strong characters.

The Hodin Cabal pulled me in from the first chapter and didn’t let go. Avril Maria Serene has created a complex web of interconnected stories that somehow all come together perfectly. Following investigative journalist Debra Ann Wynn as she uncovers increasingly dark mysteries in San Diego was genuinely unsettling in the best way.

What I loved most was how realistic the characters felt – Debra Ann’s determination to dig deeper even when things get dangerous, and Frank Spector as a chilling antagonist who thinks he’s saving the world. The three-book structure worked really well, building tension as you realize how everything connects.

The plot moves fast without feeling rushed, and Serene doesn’t shy away from the darker elements while still keeping you invested in the characters. The conspiracy angle could have felt far-fetched, but the author grounds it in believable human motivations and real-world issues like homelessness and healthcare.

If you like investigative thrillers with complex plots and characters you actually care about, this one’s worth your time. Fair warning – it gets pretty dark, but that’s what makes it so effective.

‘The Hodin Cabal: Choices’ isn’t just one mystery, it’s really three interlocking stories, all circling around the shadowy Hodin cabal and their frankly chilling agenda.

Debra Ann Wynn, our investigative journalist heroine, is smart, dogged, and very human. Her personal life collides with her professional instincts when she notices strange clusters of cancer cases, disappearances, and an unsettling connection to a young man linked with a supposed depopulation group. That’s just the first strand. The second takes a dark, unexpected turn as we meet Frank Spector, an ad exec with a double life as a serial killer, yes, really, whose choices threaten to bring him into Debra Ann’s orbit. By the time we reach the third act, the threads have tightened into a tense knot, and the revelations land with proper impact.

Avril Maria Serene writes with a pacey, clear style, and I appreciated that she didn’t spoon-feed the connections, it’s satisfying when you start to see how the pieces fit. The Hodin cabal itself is a brilliantly creepy creation, with just enough real-world plausibility to make you shiver.

My only quibble is that I could happily have had even more from Debra Ann herself, she’s such a compelling lead that I’d have liked a few more moments inside her head. Still, that’s a minor gripe in a novel that balances conspiracy, character, and high stakes so well.

If you enjoy mysteries that blur into political thriller territory, with morally messy characters and plenty to chew over afterwards, this is one to add to your list.

Investigative journalist Debra Ann Wynn is the intelligent protagonist who takes on the conspiracy. During her journey, she is helped by a whistleblower Jeremy Hansen, conflicted Paul Castro, tough Marci Robbins, and others. Each is imbued with their own personalities and weaknesses.

The sociopath Spector is an interesting bad guy. This is a book for readers who enjoy intelligent thrillers, with enough real-world details to make the premise work. How I missed novels where the good characters are absolutely good. They have moral principles, a keen sense of justice, intelligence, and intuition. This crime thriller gave my soul a rest, despite the chilling realism of the events. I rooted for the good characters and hated the bad ones. It seems that this is exactly how all those terrible events I hear about in the news happen in everyday life, events that I immediately forget, leaving only fear in my heart that it could happen to me. This is a crime thriller for conspiracy theorists.

This book pulled me in from the first page. Debra Ann Wynn is a refreshingly complex protagonist—resilient, intuitive, and driven by a sense of justice. Each book in this collection builds layer upon layer of suspense, revealing a dark and tangled web of institutional secrecy, corruption, and power. The writing is smart and deliberate, balancing investigative tension with moments of emotional depth.

What stood out most to me was the realism woven into the fiction. The themes—like medical manipulation, media influence, and psychological control—feel eerily plausible. I especially appreciated the structure of three books in one, which allowed the story to expand without rushing key developments. The blend of journalism, mystery, and speculative intrigue works beautifully.

The Hodin Cabal: Choices by Avril Maria Serene is a gripping and unflinching thriller that delves into the underbelly of institutional power, secrecy, and personal morality. With investigative journalist Debra Ann Wynn as its anchor, the novel propels readers into a shadowy world where elite forces manipulate medicine, media, and public policy under the guise of saving humanity from itself.

At the heart of this story is a chilling conspiracy: a covert syndicate—rooted in real-world institutions like the Bilderberg Group—has launched a decades-long campaign of covert depopulation. When whistleblower Jeremy Hansen (a.k.a. Dennis Whitcomb) and his pregnant partner Jennifer attempt to flee this shadowy organization, they turn to Debra Ann, whose instincts and moral compass drive the story forward.

What sets this book apart is its depth. Serene doesn’t just construct a suspenseful narrative—she builds an emotionally resonant world. The cast of characters, including the troubled but resilient Debra, the deeply haunted Paul Castro, and the hard-nosed but principled Marci Robbins, breathe authenticity. Their personal struggles mirror the book’s larger themes: the cost of silence, the burden of knowledge, and the complexity of choice in an increasingly manipulated world.

The pacing is deliberate but effective, layering backstory, emotional trauma, and investigative progress with careful control. Particularly commendable is Serene’s ability to fuse speculative fiction with grounded procedural detail—making the most improbable elements feel eerily plausible. The result is a story that feels as much like a cautionary tale as it does a mystery.

For readers who enjoy intelligent thrillers—think Michael Connelly meets Dan Brown with a dash of Margaret Atwood’s societal critique—The Hodin Cabal: Choices offers an immersive, emotionally rich experience. It challenges readers to reconsider what they believe about global power structures, all while delivering satisfying twists, raw humanity, and elegant prose.

Highly recommended for fans of mystery, conspiracy, and stories that aren’t afraid to ask, “What if the darkest version of the truth was the real one?”

A Gripping Conspiracy Thriller That Asks the Hardest Questions

The Hodin Cabal: Choices is an engrossing, provocative, and emotionally intelligent thriller that pulls no punches. Avril Maria Serene delivers a masterclass in suspenseful storytelling, blending global conspiracy, intimate character drama, and real-world ethical dilemmas into a single, unforgettable read.

At the center of the novel is Debra Ann Wynn, an investigative journalist with a sharp mind and a wounded heart, drawn into a dark web of secrets when a whistleblower from a shadowy organization—the “Hodin Cabal”—reveals a chilling truth: there’s a coordinated, global effort to reduce the human population by design. What starts as a seemingly outlandish theory quickly spirals into a tense, high-stakes narrative rooted in disturbingly plausible scenarios.

Serene’s writing is crisp and cinematic, and her characters are richly drawn and deeply human. Debra is a compelling lead—resilient yet vulnerable, ethical yet pragmatic. Supporting characters like Marci Robbins and Paul Castro add emotional weight and complexity, grounding the story’s speculative elements in very real human experience.

But this isn’t just a mystery—it’s a layered exploration of how power, information, and silence intersect. The novel tackles weighty themes like medical ethics, governmental overreach, grief, and personal accountability without ever losing its momentum. The pacing is taut, the stakes are personal, and the emotional beats land with authenticity.

Fans of authors like Dan Brown, Gillian Flynn, and Michael Connelly will feel right at home here—but The Hodin Cabal: Choices forges its own voice, one that dares to confront readers with unsettling truths and the moral consequences of looking away.

Book Review: The Hodin Cabal: Choices by Avril Maria Serene

Avril Maria Serene’s The Hodin Cabal: Choices is a masterfully constructed speculative novel that weaves together intricate political intrigue, profound moral dilemmas, and deeply personal character arcs. Set in a meticulously crafted world where power is both a weapon and a burden, the novel follows the enigmatic Hodin Cabal—a secretive and influential faction whose members navigate treacherous alliances, ethical quandaries, and the far-reaching consequences of their choices. Serene’s work stands out not only for its intellectual depth but also for its emotional resonance, making it a significant addition to contemporary speculative fiction.

    Narrative Structure and World-Building

The novel’s structure is both layered and deliberate, unfolding through multiple perspectives that provide a panoramic view of the Cabal’s inner workings. Serene avoids simplistic dichotomies of good and evil, instead presenting a world where power dynamics are fluid and motives are often obscured by necessity. The political landscape is richly detailed, with factions, historical tensions, and cultural nuances that lend authenticity to the setting. The world-building never feels expository; rather, it is revealed organically through character interactions and unfolding events.

    Characterization and Psychological Depth

The true strength of The Hodin Cabal: Choices lies in its complex characterizations. Each member of the Cabal is rendered with psychological precision, their personalities shaped by past traumas, ambitions, and conflicting loyalties. Serene excels in portraying internal conflict, particularly in moments where characters must choose between personal desires and the greater good. The protagonist (or protagonists, depending on interpretation) is neither wholly heroic nor villainous, but rather a deeply human figure struggling with the weight of responsibility.

One standout element is the novel’s exploration of moral ambiguity. Decisions are rarely clear-cut, and the consequences of actions ripple outward in unexpected ways. Serene forces the reader to question whether there can ever be a “right” choice in a world where every decision comes at a cost. This philosophical underpinning elevates the novel beyond mere entertainment, transforming it into a meditation on agency, sacrifice, and the nature of power.

    Themes and Philosophical Undercurrents

At its core, The Hodin Cabal: Choices interrogates the ethics of governance, the corrupting influence of secrecy, and the personal toll of leadership. The novel asks:

Can power ever be wielded justly, or does it inherently corrupt?
How do individuals reconcile personal morality with institutional demands?
Is loyalty to a cause more important than loyalty to people?
These questions are not presented didactically but are instead embedded within the narrative, allowing readers to draw their own conclusions. The thematic richness ensures that the novel resonates on both an intellectual and emotional level.

    Prose and Pacing

Serene’s prose is elegant yet accessible, balancing lyrical introspection with sharp, dynamic dialogue. The pacing is deliberate, allowing for deep immersion in the characters’ psyches, though some readers may find certain sections dense with internal reflection. However, this measured approach serves the novel’s contemplative nature, making the climactic moments all the more impactful.

    Critique and Considerations

While the novel’s complexity is one of its greatest strengths, it may also pose a challenge for readers seeking faster-paced action. The emphasis on political maneuvering and ethical debates might not appeal to those who prefer more plot-driven narratives. Additionally, the open-ended nature of the conclusion—while thematically fitting—may leave some desiring more definitive resolution.

    Conclusion

The Hodin Cabal: Choices is a remarkable work of speculative fiction that transcends genre conventions. Avril Maria Serene has crafted a narrative that is as thought-provoking as it is engrossing, blending intricate world-building with profound philosophical inquiry. This is a novel that demands—and rewards—careful reading, offering new layers of meaning upon reflection. It will particularly appeal to readers who appreciate morally complex characters, political intrigue, and speculative fiction that challenges as much as it entertains.

    Final Rating: 4.8/5

    ________________________________________
Given the extensive summary provided, “The Hodin Cabal: Choices (Released)” presents a complex and deeply woven narrative that aligns with the intricate plots often favored in the Mystery and Crime genre. This book, however, distinguishes itself through a multifaceted exploration of themes such as conspiracy, the ethics of depopulation, and the personal toll of uncovering dark truths. Comparatively, it draws on elements found in successful genre counterparts like the gripping intrigue of Dan Brown’s novels and the layered character development seen in Gillian Flynn’s work, yet it stands apart by intertwining speculative science fiction elements with real-world societal concerns.

    **Analysis**

    1. **Plot**: The plot intricately combines mystery, crime, and speculative fiction, creating a rich narrative landscape. Unlike traditional mysteries that often revolve around solving a crime, this story delves into the prevention of global-scale atrocities, evoking a sense of urgency and moral ambiguity not always present in its genre counterparts.

    2. **Characters**: The character development, especially of the protagonist and Spector, is nuanced, allowing readers to explore their complexities. This depth ensures characters are not merely vehicles for the plot but integral to the thematic exploration of the story, much like in Flynn’s “Gone Girl,” where character complexities drive the narrative.

    3. **Settings**: The varied settings, from urban landscapes to the tense confines of a psychiatric hospital, are well-utilized to amplify the story’s mood and themes. This effective use of setting mirrors the atmospheric tension found in Raymond Chandler’s Los Angeles, though “The Hodin Cabal” employs a broader canvas to explore its complex plot.

    4. **Writing Style**: The narrative’s pacing and structure maintain suspense and engagement, weaving between personal stories and the overarching conspiracy. This balance of personal narrative depth with plot-driven suspense is reminiscent of Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code,” though “The Hodin Cabal” leans more into speculative fiction territory.

    **Strengths**

    1. **Complexity and Originality**: The story’s blend of crime, mystery, and speculative elements is both complex and original, offering readers a fresh perspective on global issues within a fictional context.
    2. **Character Depth**: The deep character explorations enrich the narrative, making the protagonists’ journeys as compelling as the plot itself.
    3. **Thematically Rich**: The exploration of themes such as ethics, power, and survival adds layers of meaning, inviting readers to ponder real-world issues.

    .
    .
**Overall Enjoyment**: On a scale of 1-10, “The Hodin Cabal: Choices (Released)” rates an 8 for its originality, depth, and engagement, despite the challenges its complexity and pacing might present to some readers.

    Review
    ________________________________________
**Critique of “The Hodin Cabal: Choices (FINAL)”**

“The Hodin Cabal: Choices (FINAL)” offers a deep dive into a complex and enthralling world where mystery, crime, and a dark global conspiracy intertwine. Through the eyes of its protagonist, investigative journalist Debra Ann Wynn, readers are pulled into a narrative that explores themes of power, ethics, and humanity’s future. The plot, rich in suspense and intricacies, bears resemblance to the compelling narratives found in works by authors like Dan Brown and John Grisham, where every chapter peels back layers of a much larger scheme.

    **Plot Comparison:**
The Hodin Cabal’s plot shares similarities with popular books in the Mystery and Crime genre through its use of a global conspiracy and a small group of individuals uncovering the truth. Much like in Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code,” the protagonist is caught in a web of danger and deception, with each discovery challenging the reader’s understanding of the narrative’s reality. However, “The Hodin Cabal” stands out by weaving in contemporary concerns such as environmental degradation, population control, and the ethics of technology, offering a fresh perspective on the genre.

    **Character Analysis:**
Characters in “The Hodin Cabal” are meticulously developed, with Debra Ann Wynn serving as a relatable and compelling central figure. Her resilience and determination mirror that of Lisbeth Salander in Stieg Larsson’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” Both characters are driven by a quest for truth, regardless of the personal cost. However, “The Hodin Cabal” could benefit from deeper exploration of its antagonist’s motivations to match the complex villainy seen in Moriarty of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes series. [NOTE: See added Book 2, Chapters 15 and 16 to address this issue – FSD 10/1/2024]

    **Settings and Atmosphere:**
The settings in “The Hodin Cabal” effectively contribute to the book’s tense atmosphere, from the sterile corridors of psychiatric hospitals to the shadowy realms of cyber espionage. This use of setting to enhance narrative tension is reminiscent of the atmospheric detail found in Raymond Chandler’s “The Big Sleep.” Nevertheless, the book could further exploit its diverse locales to enrich the narrative tapestry and deepen the reader’s immersion.

    **Writing Style:**
The writing style of “The Hodin Cabal” is accessible and engaging, maintaining a balance between detailed exposition and fast-paced action. It successfully employs a technique seen in Gillian Flynn’s “Gone Girl,” where shifting perspectives and timelines keep readers guessing. However, refining the dialogue to ensure characters’ voices are distinct and consistent would elevate the narrative’s authenticity.

    **Strengths:**
    1. **Complex Plot:** The intricate plot captivates readers, encouraging them to piece together the mystery alongside the protagonist.
    2. **Relevant Themes:** The book’s exploration of current global issues is both thought-provoking and timely.
    3. **Character Development:** The protagonist’s growth and resilience are compelling, driving the narrative forward.
    .
    .
    .
    **Overall Rating: 8/10**
“The Hodin Cabal: Choices (FINAL)” stands out for its engaging plot and timely themes… the book’s strengths in plot complexity and character development make it a compelling read for fans of the Mystery and Crime genre.

    ________________________________________
Given the detailed summary of “The Hodin Cabal: Choices,” it’s clear that the book weaves an intricate narrative marrying elements of mystery, crime, and a deep dive into psychological and societal implications of power and control. Compared to other successful books in the Mystery and Crime genre, “The Hodin Cabal: Choices” stands out for its focus on the intersection of individual moral dilemmas and broader societal issues, such as depopulation and the ethics of law enforcement against a backdrop of homelessness, which is less commonly explored in traditional crime novels.

**Plot Analysis**: The plot of “The Hodin Cabal: Choices” is complex, unfolding through a series of investigations, personal battles, and a deep conspiracy aiming for global depopulation. This narrative complexity is reminiscent of novels like “The Da Vinci Code” by Dan Brown, where readers are drawn into a labyrinth of historical intrigue and conspiracy. However, while Brown’s work leans more into historical and religious conspiracy, “The Hodin Cabal: Choices” plants its roots in contemporary societal issues, making it feel more immediate and perhaps even plausible, which can be both a strength and a challenge for the reader.

**Character Analysis**: The characters in “The Hodin Cabal: Choices,” particularly the protagonist and Frank Spector, are deeply developed, offering insights into their psychological makeup and moral complexities. This depth is akin to the characters created by Gillian Flynn in “Gone Girl,” where the psychological depth drives the narrative forward. However, the sheer number of characters and their interconnected stories in “The Hodin Cabal: Choices” might sometimes overwhelm the reader, unlike the more focused character exploration in Flynn’s work.

**Setting and Writing Style**: The setting, shifting from San Diego to Boston among other locations, provides a broad canvas that highlights various societal issues, similar to the approach taken by Stieg Larsson in the Millennium series. The writing style, characterized by detailed descriptions and a complex narrative structure, demands the reader’s attention and patience, rewarding them with a richly woven tapestry of intrigue and moral questions.

    **Strong Aspects**:
    1. **Complex Plot**: The intricate conspiracy plot offers a compelling narrative that keeps readers engaged and guessing.
    2. **Character Depth**: The psychological depth of the characters adds layers to the narrative, making the moral and ethical dilemmas they face more impactful.
    3. **Societal Commentary**: The book’s exploration of significant societal issues, such as depopulation and homelessness, sets it apart from more traditional mystery and crime novels.
    .
    .
    .
**Rating**: Considering the complexity of the plot, the depth of character development, and the unique blend of crime mystery with pressing societal issues, “The Hodin Cabal: Choices” would likely be rated an 8 out of 10. This score reflects its potential to offer a highly engaging and thought-provoking read… Readers looking for a crime and mystery novel with depth, complexity, and a contemporary edge will likely find “The Hodin Cabal: Choices” a rewarding experience.

To impress outsiders with the success of the Hodin cabal’s murderous activities, Frank Spector put together a “highlight reel” of news and Internet items that have leaked out into the public sphere. Those links are to popular and reputable real-world  webpages and articles, and readers of “The Hodin Cabal: Choices” have access to them as a bonus feature. For anyone who has purchased “The Hodin Cabal: Choices” (or is a member of  AvrilMSerene.com), the released version of the highlight reel can be downloaded for free.
